How our map data is made

Where the places, lifts, runs and roads on the PowderZone map come from, how we confirm them, and how much to trust them.

The short version

The map is a planning tool. It is here to give you a general idea of what is in a village, how busy it is, and whether it has what you need. Positions are approximate, and some places will be wrong or out of date. Please confirm the exact address with the business before you travel. See also the location accuracy section of our disclaimer.

Where places come from

OpenStreetMap. Open map data made by volunteers. We use it for names, types and positions, and it is credited on our credits page.

Business websites. A business’s own website is the best source for its spelling, its address and whether it is still trading. We link to it from the place’s popup where we have it.

Village and tourism sites. Local tourism association and town sites list the businesses in their area, often with addresses, phone numbers and opening details.

Japanese government address data. Where a business publishes its address, the government’s open address lookup turns that into a position on the map.

Lifts, runs and roads

Lift lines, run lines and roads come from OpenStreetMap. They are often good, but they can be incomplete or out of date, and run grades are not always shown. Please do not use them to find your way on the mountain.

Help us fix it

If you spot a place that is wrong, closed, in the wrong spot or missing, please use the Report a mistake link. If you run a business on the map, tell us and we can confirm it against your own information. Corrections are credited to the person who sent them, if they would like that.
